A moving account of the brutal persecution of the Uyghur community in China and the author’s escape. Since 2017, the Uyghurs, a mostly Muslim Turkic group in Xinjiang, have faced horrific repression under a sophisticated surveillance system. Tahir Hamut Izgil, a Uyghur poet and filmmaker, was detained, tortured, and imprisoned in 1996 after trying to travel. By 2016, with internment camps becoming widespread, Izgil and his wife realized their only hope was to flee the country.
