This volume brings together six stories by Nobel laureate Issac Bashevis Singer, six unpublished masterpieces (with the exception of The Guest, published in our Mini-readings collection). The world described by Isaac Bashevis Singer in his novels and stories evidences the destruction of a threatened culture, but this destruction is not described by Bashevis Singer as a process coming from the outside world, but rather from within Jewish families, more permeable to modernity of what was believed. Thus, his characters are young men destined to be rabbis who lose their faith, Jewish-Polish women who go abroad or marry Gentiles, or families who, after making their fortune, forget their own traditions.
