The young Dominique rehearses her role as Nina in Chekhov's The Seagull, accompanied by her boyfriend Jean, an aspiring writer. They are both twenty and in full learning of life. Above them loom two suffocating figures who are already in their fifties: Jean’s mother, Elvire, and his stepfather, Caveaux.
