Nicole and André are a retired French couple who travel to Moscow to visit Masha, his daughter from a previous marriage. Through a subtle interplay of thoughts and reflections, their awareness of the present moment gradually emerges, as if the distance from their usual Parisian life acts as a catalyst for a definitive understanding of themselves and their relationship. Through this story, Beauvoir addresses themes such as marital crises, the fear of aging, and the sense of failure at not having achieved the dreams of youth. Inspired by her time with Sartre in the Soviet Union during the 1960s, the author contrasts in this unique novel the initial enthusiasm for that country with the subsequent disillusionment at the disappearance of a pure and idealized socialism.
