In the early 1930s, the Great Depression and a severe drought forced thousands of farmers to migrate to California in search of work. Despite being essential for the harvest, they were despised by locals. John Steinbeck portrayed them in reports for The San Francisco News, which later inspired his famous novel The Grapes of Wrath. Photographer Dorothea Lange also documented the situation, producing images that have become classics of photography.
