In this essay, Han argues that Western society is undergoing a paradigm shift towards a "society of fatigue" due to an excess of positivity. According to him, each era has its emblematic diseases: the bacterial era ended with antibiotics, and although we fear pandemics, the viral era has passed thanks to immunology. From a pathological perspective, the 21st century is characterized by neurological issues, with diseases such as depression, ADHD, borderline personality disorder, and burnout syndrome. These are not infections but pathological states resulting from an excess of positivity.
