Librarian Chloe Sampson has been struggling for some time to take care of her three younger siblings ever since her mother left and abandoned them. She is close to the end of her strength when she comes across a rare edition of a book from the 1960s. Intrigued, Chloe examines the copy and discovers notes scribbled in the margins, exchanged by two young lovers when the book was still new. She has no doubt that this is a sign of fate and takes the book home with her. When she tells her grumpy neighbor about the book she has found, she is surprised when he offers to buy it for an exorbitant sum. Could he be one of the lovers? Soon, she discovers that this is not the only old book in town with romantic notes in the margins. This sets off a literary treasure hunt that Chloe is determined to see through to the end.
