Modern pathology lies in oversimplification, which blinds us to the complexity of reality. But how can we approach the complexity of human knowledge in a non-simplifying way? Complex thinking is driven by a permanent tension between the aspiration to a unified, undivided, and non-reductionist understanding and the recognition of the unfinished and incomplete nature of all knowledge. This book brings together a series of essays and presentations, written between 1976 and 1988, in which Edgar Morin introduces the concept of complexity and transdisciplinarity. His aim is to develop, from diverse areas of social and scientific practice, a complex way of thinking about human experience. This approach should allow for an ethical praxis not only in the field of knowledge but also in everyday actions, regardless of the sphere in which we operate. Knowledge, therefore, will always be, by necessity, multidimensional, open, and flexible, uniting human beings in their adventure toward discovering ourselves, our limitations, and our possibilities.
