There are many reasons why The Third Policeman is a unique novel. The title of the book refers to a mysterious character who holds the keys to escape a series of strange events that will be repeated throughout the story. In his mind-blowing journey through completely extravagant places, our protagonist—who cannot remember his name—will stumble upon two-dimensional buildings, highly sexual bicycles, tons of omnium and a mad scientist called De Selby who is determined to prove that the earth is not spherical but “sausage-like.” Throughout this unusual and ingenious novel, the author introduces us, in the manner of Lewis Carroll, to the territory of the big questions, thus giving us some keys to understanding it: “Hell goes round and round. Its shape is circular and its nature is endless, repetitive and very close to unbearable.”
