El general franquista Queipo de Llano se disponía a tomar la ciudad y, sin armas ni apoyo del Gobierno, los milicianos republicanos desertaron. Azucena relata cómo ella y Martina, la nieta de la rica propietaria de una fábrica de naranjas, se convirtieron entonces en amigas inseparables. Junto a ellas, personajes ficticios o reales, como si la autora los entrevistara a modo de documental, relatarán su experiencia.
