Steppenwolf arose as a result of an emotional and psychological crisis in Hesse, who suffered a depressive picture after separating from Ruth Wenger, his second wife. Steppenwolf recreates that state, and many readers identify with the 'steppenwolf' figure, a dissident who defends his right to be different.
