Theodor Kallifatides, a major European writer of the late 20th century, is celebrated for his novels Campesinos y señores (1973), El arado y la espada (1975), and Una paz cruel (1977), now translated into Spanish for the first time. These works depict his childhood and the tragic period in Greece from the Nazi invasion in 1941 to the end of the Greek Civil War in 1949, and the post-war misery. El arado y la espada shows Yalós's brief peace after World War II, soon shattered by a new conflict as fascists rise and partisans resist. The story focuses on Minos and his family, including his storyteller uncle Stelios and his love for a Jewish girl, Rebeca.
