Grady McNeil is seventeen years old and has convinced her parents to leave her alone in their Central Park apartment while they go on a summer cruise. No one explains why she disdains the delights of Europe for the hot summer of New York, but Grady has a secret: she is in love with Clyde Manzer, a twenty-three-year-old young man who works in the parking lot where she keeps her car. . He is Jewish, a war veteran and from the lower class. And as the summer progresses, what began as a vacation love affair will become more serious, murkier and more equivocal... In 1966 Truman Capote left his Brooklyn apartment and left a box of papers that the building's doorman rescued and kept. In 2004, the contents of that box were auctioned at Sotheby's, and there was the manuscript of this novel that Capote had begun to write in 1943 and on which he had worked for more than a decade, until finally abandoning it.
