Lucy Hull, a young children's librarian, meets Ian Drake, a ten-year-old boy who becomes her favorite reader. The problem Lucy faces is that the boy needs her help to hide his books from his mother, an authoritarian woman who censors his reading and sends him to conversion therapy. One night, Lucy discovers Ian camped out in the library with a backpack full of supplies and a plan to escape. Without quite knowing how, she becomes involved in his escape, convinced that she must protect him from his reality. Thus begins a road trip as outlandish as it is revealing, from Missouri to Vermont, accompanied by an untimely boyfriend and family secrets that come to light.
